What is layered zirconia (E.max)?
Layered zirconia is a restoration in which IPS e.max ceramic is applied by a dental technician, layer by layer, onto a CAD/CAM-milled zirconia framework. The framework provides the strength, while the layering ceramic recreates the differences in shade and light transmission between dentine, enamel and incisal areas. The result is deeper, more lifelike aesthetics than a monolithic restoration can offer.
Indications
This solution is chosen for the anterior region, where aesthetic demands are highest, and for premolars visible in the smile line. On discoloured abutments or teeth with metal posts, the zirconia framework can mask the dark substrate, which is an advantage in situations where an all-ceramic veneer or crown would not be sufficient.
- Anterior single crowns and short-span bridges
- Discoloured abutments or teeth with metal posts
- Cases requiring a precise shade and surface texture match with adjacent teeth
- Implant restorations in the aesthetic zone
Material and manufacturing process
The final restoration is first designed in full contour in 3Shape or Exocad. The framework is then reduced by a controlled cut-back so that the layering ceramic has an even, well-supported space. This approach avoids unsupported ceramic and reduces the risk of chipping. The framework is milled from a zirconia disc on an Arum 5-axis CAD/CAM milling unit and sintered. IPS e.max ceramic is then built up in dentine, enamel and effect layers and fired in an Ivoclar Vivadent Programat P300 furnace using controlled programmes. Finally, surface texture and gloss are adjusted to match the adjacent teeth.
Why Marjinal CAD?
At Marjinal CAD, we combine digital precision with skilled handwork. Framework design and marginal fit are verified digitally, while the layering is done by hand with the care the aesthetic zone requires. The shade information and photographs you send serve as the reference for translucency, mamelon structure and characterisation. If a point needs clarification during design, we will contact you before production.
Sending your case
In aesthetic cases, accurate information directly influences the result. You can send your case in two ways:
- Intraoral scan: Send your iTero, 3Shape TRIOS or Medit data as STL/PLY files. We recommend including the opposing arch, a bite registration and, if possible, a pre-preparation scan.
- Conventional impression: Send a silicone impression or a stone model; it will be scanned and digitised in our dental laboratory.
Please add photographs taken with a shade tab, the stump shade and any special characterisation requests to the prescription. Contact us on +90 542 329 30 56 or at [email protected].
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between layered and monolithic zirconia?
Monolithic zirconia is a single piece without layering. In layered zirconia, IPS e.max ceramic is built up by hand on the framework, giving deeper translucency and a more lifelike appearance.
Is layered zirconia suitable for discoloured abutments?
Yes. The zirconia framework can mask dark abutments and metal posts, making it a good choice for discoloured teeth.
How is the chipping risk reduced in layered restorations?
We reduce the framework from the full-contour design with a controlled cut-back. This ensures the ceramic is supported everywhere and has an even thickness.
What information should I send for an aesthetic case?
Photographs with a shade tab, the stump shade, the opposing arch and a bite registration have the greatest influence on the result.
