What are mock-up and smile design?
A mock-up lets you transfer the digital design of the planned final restoration into the patient's mouth with a temporary material, as a one-to-one preview. Smile design is the digital planning of that design based on facial proportions, lip line and smile line. Used together, they show you and your patient the result before any preparation starts, so the treatment plan moves toward a shared, clearly defined goal.
Indications
A mock-up is recommended whenever tooth shape, length or arrangement will change in the aesthetic zone.
- Planning of veneers and anterior crowns
- Diastema closure and tooth shape corrections
- Comprehensive rehabilitations with a change in vertical dimension
- Aesthetic cases that require patient approval and expectation management
- Cases that need a guide for minimally invasive preparation
Material and production
The design is created as a digital wax-up in 3Shape or Exocad. The patient photos you send are added as a reference, and the midline, incisal edge position, tooth proportions and smile line are defined accordingly. We share the design for your approval and apply any changes you request. Once approved, the design can reach the mouth in two ways: an intraoral mock-up with bis-acrylic material, using a silicone key made on a 3D-printed model, or try-in restorations produced directly from PMMA or 3D-printing resin. The same digital design later serves as the reference for the preparation guide, provisional restorations and final zirconia or e.max work, so the smile your patient approved is carried through to the finished result.
Why Marjinal CAD?
The best way to avoid surprises in aesthetic cases is to see the result before you begin. As a dental laboratory, we keep design and production in one digital chain, so the form approved at the mock-up stage is transferred to the provisional and the final restoration without loss.

Sending a case
You can send STL or PLY files from an intraoral scanner (iTero, 3Shape TRIOS, Medit) or a conventional impression. For an accurate design, we recommend full-face photos while smiling, with lips at rest and with a retractor, plus a bite registration. Describe the expectations of your patient and your clinical goals in the case notes. For questions, contact us at +90 542 329 30 56 or [email protected]. Clinics abroad work with us just as easily through digital files.
Frequently asked questions
Does a mock-up require tooth preparation?
No. An intraoral mock-up is applied over the unprepared teeth with a temporary material and can be removed easily.
Which photos should I send for smile design?
Full-face photos while smiling, with lips at rest and an anterior view with a retractor are sufficient. They help define the midline and smile line accurately.
Is the approved design used for the final restoration?
Yes. The digital design approved at the mock-up stage is used directly as the reference for the provisional and the final zirconia or e.max restoration.
How is the mock-up applied in the mouth?
A silicone key made on a 3D-printed model is filled with bis-acrylic material and seated on the teeth. Alternatively, a PMMA or 3D-printed try-in restoration can be produced.
