Implant Bar Overdenture

Bar-retained overdentures: stable, removable and easy to clean

  • Bar designed from the tooth set-up
  • Laser-sintered Cr-Co bar
  • Milled titanium bar option
  • Hygienic, cleansable shape
  • Patient-specific retention elements

What is a bar overdenture?

A bar overdenture is a removable implant-supported denture that is retained by clips or friction elements on a bar splinting the implants together. The bar connects the implants rigidly and distributes chewing forces, while the denture sits firmly on top. Compared with a conventional complete denture it offers clearly better retention and chewing comfort, and because the patient can take it out, daily hygiene stays simple.

Indications

A bar overdenture is a good choice for edentulous patients when the number of implants or the bone volume does not support a fixed prosthesis, or when ease of cleaning is a priority.

  • Patients with insufficient retention of a complete denture, especially in the mandible
  • Rehabilitations planned on two to four implants
  • Cases where bone loss calls for lip and cheek support
  • Patients for whom a removable prosthesis makes oral hygiene easier
  • Non-parallel implants that need a common path of insertion

Material and production

We design the bar in 3Shape or Exocad on the basis of the final tooth set-up. This keeps enough material thickness in the denture base above the bar and reduces the risk of fracture. Bar height, distance to the mucosa and cleaning spaces are planned digitally. Cr-Co bars are produced by laser sintering; depending on the case, titanium bars are milled on our Arum 5-axis CAD/CAM unit. Retention elements are selected according to the bar profile and the manual dexterity of the patient. Passive fit is critical here as well, so the bar is checked to seat on the implants without tension. The overdenture is then made on the bar, with a metal reinforcement where required, and the occlusion is balanced.

Why Marjinal CAD?

As a dental laboratory, we treat the bar and the denture as parts of one digital plan. The bar does not crowd the teeth, and the denture is designed with enough space for the bar and correct tooth positions.

  • Bar design driven by the tooth set-up
  • Laser-sintered Cr-Co or 5-axis milled titanium bars
  • Hygienic bar shape with planned cleaning spaces
  • Retention elements chosen for the individual patient
  • Digital workflow in 3Shape, Exocad and Dentalwings

Sending a case

If you use an intraoral scanner (iTero, 3Shape TRIOS, Medit), send STL or PLY files with scan bodies, a scan of the opposing arch and a bite registration. A scan of the existing denture is a valuable reference for the tooth set-up. In a conventional workflow, an implant impression, a bite registration and the current denture, if available, are sufficient. Please state the implant system, platform diameter, connection type and your preferred retention type in the case notes. Contact us at +90 542 329 30 56 or [email protected].

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a bar overdenture and a Toronto bridge?

A bar overdenture is removed by the patient and held on the bar by retention elements. A Toronto bridge is screw-retained, fixed, and can only be removed by the dentist.

How many implants does a bar overdenture need?

Bar overdentures are usually planned on two to four implants. The number and positions are decided by the clinician according to jaw and bone conditions.

Which material is used for the bar?

We produce the bar in Cr-Co by laser sintering or mill it from titanium on an Arum 5-axis CAD/CAM unit, depending on the case and your preference.

Can I choose the retention type?

Yes. State your preferred retention elements in the case notes and we design the bar profile accordingly. If you leave it open, we suggest a suitable option.
