What are PMMA provisionals?
PMMA provisionals are temporary crowns and bridges CAD/CAM-milled from industrially polymerised PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) discs. Polymerised under controlled factory conditions, the material shows less porosity, higher strength and better colour stability than chairside temporaries. These properties make PMMA a reliable choice for provisionals that the patient will wear for a longer time and that need to be tested under function.
Indications
PMMA provisionals are preferred when the provisional stays in the mouth for a longer period or has to be tested under chewing load.
- Comprehensive rehabilitations that require long-term provisionals
- Cases where a change in vertical dimension is tested functionally
- Provisional crowns and bridges on implants
- Provisionals for soft-tissue conditioning around implants
- Try-in prostheses for Toronto and other full-arch designs
Material and production
We design the provisional in 3Shape or Exocad and define the margin, contact points, occlusion and, for bridges, the connector cross-sections digitally. If a design was approved at the mock-up stage, the provisional is derived from it. The restoration is milled from a PMMA disc in a suitable shade on our Arum 5-axis CAD/CAM unit. After milling, the surface is finished and polished to a high gloss, which reduces plaque accumulation. Where needed, it is characterised with surface stains. On implant provisionals, the emergence profile defined in the design shapes the soft tissue for the final restoration. The form, occlusion and vertical dimension you test are then transferred to the final zirconia or e.max restoration on the same digital data.
Why Marjinal CAD?
We see the PMMA provisional as the tested prototype of the final restoration. As a dental laboratory, we keep the design data intact from start to finish, so every adjustment made in the provisional can be carried into the definitive work.

Sending a case
Send the preparation scan or an implant scan with scan bodies, the opposing arch and a bite registration from your intraoral scanner (iTero, 3Shape TRIOS, Medit) as STL or PLY. We also work with conventional impressions. If you plan a change in vertical dimension, add the target value and, if available, the mock-up approval to your case notes; for implant cases, specify the implant system and platform. Frequently asked questions
Why are PMMA provisionals stronger than chairside temporaries?
PMMA discs are polymerised under controlled factory conditions, giving a more homogeneous structure with less porosity. This results in higher strength and colour stability.
Can PMMA provisionals be used on implants?
Yes. They are used for implant-supported provisional crowns and bridges and shape the soft tissue for the final restoration through the designed emergence profile.
Can I test a new vertical dimension with PMMA provisionals?
Yes. When a change in vertical dimension is planned, PMMA provisionals are a suitable way to test the new occlusion under function.
How do I choose between PMMA and 3D-printed provisionals?
3D-printed provisionals are sufficient for short- to medium-term use. For longer wearing periods, implant provisionals or high chewing loads, we recommend PMMA.
