Digital Design & Provisionals

3D-Printed Provisionals

Printed provisionals that already carry the final design

  • Resin printed on a 3D printer
  • Design close to the final form
  • Controlled contacts and occlusion
  • Can be derived from the mock-up
  • Efficient for multi-unit cases

What are 3D-printed provisionals?

3D-printed provisionals are digitally designed temporary crowns and bridges printed layer by layer from resin intended for dental use. Because the design carries the form of the final restoration, your patient wears a provisional that is aesthetically and functionally close to the planned result while the definitive work is produced. Compared with chairside temporaries, shape, contact points and occlusion are controlled from the start.

Indications

3D-printed provisionals are suited to short- and medium-term use between preparation and delivery of the final restoration.

  • Provisional restorations after crown and bridge preparation
  • Functional testing of a design approved at the mock-up stage
  • Checking form and phonetics in multi-unit cases
  • Aesthetic try-in for veneers and anterior cases
  • Try-in prototypes for Toronto or other full-arch designs

Material and production

We design the provisional in 3Shape or Exocad and define the margin, contact points and occlusion digitally. If a design has already been approved at the mock-up stage, the provisional is derived directly from it. The restoration is printed from resin on our 3D printer, then washed, post-cured with light, freed from support structures, finished and polished. 3D printing allows several restorations to be produced in one run and handles complex geometries without material loss. The same design is later used as the reference for the final zirconia or e.max restoration. For longer wearing periods or higher strength requirements, we recommend PMMA provisionals.

Why Marjinal CAD?

We treat the provisional as the first version of the final restoration. As a dental laboratory, we make sure the form, contacts and occlusion tested in the provisional are not lost; the definitive work continues on the same digital data.

  • Digital design in 3Shape and Exocad
  • 3D-printing resin intended for dental use
  • Controlled contact points and occlusion
  • One-to-one match with the mock-up design
  • PMMA alternative for longer wearing periods

Sending a case

Send the preparation scan, the opposing arch and a bite registration from your intraoral scanner (iTero, 3Shape TRIOS, Medit) as STL or PLY. If you want the provisional ready before you prepare, share a pre-preparation scan and the planned preparation. We also work with conventional impressions. Add the shade and, if available, the mock-up approval to your case notes. Reach us at +90 542 329 30 56 or [email protected].

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 3D-printed and PMMA provisionals?

3D-printed provisionals are printed from resin and suit short- to medium-term use. PMMA provisionals are milled from industrial PMMA discs and offer higher strength for longer wearing periods.

Can the provisional be made before I prepare?

Yes. Send a pre-preparation scan and details of the planned preparation, and we can design and print the provisional in advance.

Is the mock-up design transferred to the provisional?

Yes. The design approved at the mock-up stage is used directly for the provisional, so your patient wears the form they approved.
