Monolithic Zirconia

One piece, high strength, natural shade gradient

  • 5-axis CAD/CAM milling
  • No chipping risk
  • Natural shade gradient with multilayer discs
  • High strength for posterior regions
  • High-gloss polish that protects antagonists

What is monolithic zirconia?

Monolithic zirconia is a full-contour restoration milled from a single zirconia disc by CAD/CAM, with no veneering porcelain applied on top. In zirconia crowns and bridges it combines the high strength of the material with the natural shade gradient of modern multilayer discs. Because the entire restoration consists of one homogeneous material, the chipping risk known from layered systems is eliminated.

Indications

Monolithic zirconia is the first choice in the posterior region, where occlusal loads are highest. It is a reliable option for patients with suspected bruxism, for cases with limited interocclusal space and for multi-unit bridges. With multilayer discs, aesthetically convincing results are also possible in the anterior region, although for highly translucent anterior cases we recommend considering a layered solution as well.

  • Single posterior crowns and bridges
  • Patients with bruxism or parafunctional habits
  • Cases requiring thin restorations due to limited occlusal clearance
  • Implant-supported crowns and bridges

Material and manufacturing process

Once your case reaches our dental laboratory, the scan data or model is assessed in 3Shape or Exocad. Crown morphology, contact points, occlusal contacts and connector dimensions are designed digitally. After the design is finalised, the restoration is milled from a zirconia disc on an Arum 5-axis CAD/CAM milling unit. Following sintering, the fit is checked, stains are applied where needed and the restoration is finished with glaze or a high-gloss polish. Particular attention is paid to smooth, polished occlusal surfaces to protect the opposing dentition.

Why Marjinal CAD?

Marjinal CAD is a dental lab in Turkey that runs every case through a fully digital workflow. Impressions are digitised with some of the most precise scanners available, and marginal fit is verified at the design stage. 5-axis milling allows accurate machining of deep interproximal areas and complex anatomy. Shade selection is based on the shade guide information and photographs you provide, and any special requests can simply be added to the prescription.

Sending your case

You can send monolithic zirconia cases in two ways:

  • Intraoral scan: Export data from your iTero, 3Shape TRIOS or Medit scanner as STL/PLY files. Including the opposing arch and a bite registration improves design accuracy.
  • Conventional impression: Send a silicone impression or a stone model; it will be scanned and digitised in our laboratory.

Simply note the shade, preparation margin and your expectations on the prescription. For questions, call +90 542 329 30 56 or write to [email protected].

Frequently asked questions

Can monolithic zirconia be used for anterior teeth?

Yes, multilayer discs allow aesthetic results in the anterior region. For cases demanding high translucency, we recommend also considering layered zirconia or e.max.

Does monolithic zirconia wear the opposing teeth?

Monolithic zirconia with smooth, high-gloss polished occlusal surfaces is gentle on the antagonist. That is why we give special attention to polishing during finishing.

Is monolithic zirconia suitable for bruxism patients?

Yes. With no veneering porcelain, the risk of fracture is low, making it a reliable option for patients with suspected bruxism.

Can I send the case digitally?

Yes. You can send iTero, 3Shape TRIOS or Medit scans as STL/PLY files, or send a conventional impression.

Send us your next case

Send us your intraoral scan (STL/PLY) or impression, and we will send the design back for your approval. For questions, call +90 542 329 30 56 or write to [email protected].
